What in the world is the Union County Foundation??
(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation
by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.)
“I see your organization in the paper a lot ... what exactly is the Union County Foundation?” This is a
question I hear quite often. The good news is that people want to know; the downside is that they have to ask.
Here is the nuts and bolts answer. We are a local not for profit charitable organization that exists to promote
and facilitate charitable giving in Union County. We offer lots of ways to do that, and the particular "vehicles"
will be the focus of future articles. Back to a bit of our history .... Our roots date back to 1953 and Colonel
Dana W. Morey. Mr. Morey set up a private foundation which through its trust advisors (Charles B. Mills, P.C. Williams,
Frank Schneider, Russell Banks, and Dwight Graham) was instrumental in the building of the Dana Morey Center wing
of Memorial Hospital.
The Morey Foundation evolved through several name changes and restructurings until it became a part of what is
now known as “The Union County Foundation.” The Foundation is one of over 500 community foundations in the United
States and one of more than 70 in the state of Ohio. Clearly the community foundation concept is one that has purpose
and positive impact in communities all over this nation.
The Union County Foundation is governed by a local board of trustees
comprised of 15 men and women of the county's finest leaders. These men and women (your friends and neighbors)
volunteer their time, talents, and service in an effort to make Union County a better place to live, work, and
raise our families.
I hope this brief article has helped you better understand the Union County Foundation. In the other articles in
this series, we will discuss specific ways the Foundation can assist you in accomplishing your charitable goals
and in so doing how you can “preserve your footprint in time.” For further information, call us at 642-9618 or
