How can I leave a meaningful legacy??
(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation
by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.)
The Union County Foundation's motto is “preserving your footprint in time.” This slogan has significant
meaning and challenges us each to impact our community and County in a positive way. Living in a time and culture
that all too often revolves around “self” we should take pause and reflect on how we might move beyond “self” and
through our giving improve the quality of life in Union County. It has been said, “in a hundred years no one will
remember what house you lived in, what car you drove, and probably not even what you did for a living.” What future
generations will remember is how you preserved your footprint in time by touching tomorrow through your charitable
giving of today. In simple terms you can take actions now in the present that will have future lasting and significant
positive effects on the communities of Union County. You can take charitable steps now that will make a
difference today, tomorrow, and even into perpetuity with proper planning.
One of The Union County Foundation’s main goals is to promote charitable giving in our County. We want to encourage
you and help you to make our communities better places to live and raise our families. Your charitable goals might
be fulfilled through something as simple as adding a bequest to your will or donating in the name of a loved one
to a charity that has meant something special to you or your family. You might want to simply name your favorite
charity as the beneficiary of a non-essential life insurance policy or better yet gift an insurance policy to a
charity. You might want to make your favorite charity(s) the beneficiary of a charitable
gift annuity. You may want to consider starting a donor
advised fund to benefit your favorite charitable causes. A charitable
remainder trust might perfectly address current income needs while benefiting a charity
upon your death. There are many ways you can easily and painlessly leave a legacy, but the first step is to make
the decision that you want to do it. Clearly the first step towards “preserving your footprint in time”
is to begin to think how you might like that footprint to look. The Union County Foundation can help you with that
vision. For further information call us at 642-9618, email us at info@UnionCountyFoundation.org, or stop by our office at 126 N. Main St. in Marysville. |
