(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Executive Director) "Legacy" is one of those words often heard but seldom considered. After all, "legacy" refers to what we leave for future generations and most of us are a whole lot less concerned about the future than we are about just making it through today. Many local families have been able to look beyond today and see a way to touch tomorrow through the establishment of ongoing Scholarship Funds. A recent example was modeled by the Conlon family. Pat Conlon spent the better part of her life living and teaching in this community. Her four children all grew up here and each graduated from MHS starting in 1975. Upon Pat’s death in 2003 the four siblings determined the best way they could honor their mother’s life would be through setting up an on-going Scholarship Fund to support post high school education for graduating MHS students. Per the families direction the scholarship is a four-year renewable award. The Union County Foundation was able to shape the initial legacy dream into a reality for the Conlon siblings. Many other Union County families have been able to leave a legacy through their own Scholarship Funds including the Malcolm MacIvor Family, the Charles Green Family, the Sara Mae Burnside Family, The Kathleen Imbody Family, and the Dan Kyle Family, to name just a few. These Scholarship Funds are making a difference in the lives of Union County young adults and are a way of saying to them that we believe in and are willing to invest in their futures. Families are pleased to know (and often surprised) that they can relatively easily start a Scholarship Fund in memory of their loved one by directing memorial gifts, present and future, into that Fund. Those families that have started such Funds will tell you that being able to initiate these lasting and heart felt memorials has been a significant and meaningful way to honor the past while reaching out and positively impacting the future. The Union County Foundation is equipped to help you achieve your charitable goals by providing as a free service: resource information, charitable gift annuities/life income plans, Fund formation, and assistance with planned giving and estate planning.
