Local Fraternals -- Highly Charitable
(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Executive Director)

Many people in this county are unaware of the substantial level of charitable contributions made by several of our local fraternal organizations to Union County causes. Working closely with these organizations I see every day how much positive effect they are having on our County and I feel this information should be highlighted and recognized.

Let it first be said that all the fraternal organizations of Union County do wonderful work and make a difference in the quality of our lives through their service to our communities and support of honorable and worthy causes such as scholarships, health needs, and other social services. But this article is to specifically recognize the efforts of those fraternal organizations that have been impacted by House Bill 512. In January of 2003 H.B. 512 legislated that a substantial percentage of net profits from bingo and other games must be directed to 501(c)3 charities

This complicated legislation presented difficult challenges for fraternal organizations throughout the state causing some organizations to no longer be able to continue operations. The local story is one quite different and one of success. Through sound leadership and administration, locally the Eagles, Elks, and Moose lodges have successfully complied with the complicated legislation resulting in significant support of Union County charitable causes. In just the first six months of 2004 through the Eagles Benevolence Charity Fund, the Marysville Moose Lodge Charity Fund, and the Marysville Elks Benevolent Fund well over $100,000 has been directed to Union County charitable causes. Causes that have been supported range from law enforcement and fire protection to support of the county’s high school athletic departments. The Union County Foundation is pleased to be able to provide a structure that has allowed these local fraternal organizations (and service organizations such as Kiwanis scholarships) to keep these significant charitable dollars in Union County.
