(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.) Union County is a wonderful place to live work and raise our families. I guess I’ve always known that but the more time that passes the more I appreciate the reality of the statement. Two weekends ago my MHS high school class held its 30th reunion. Classmates traveled from all parts of the country to attend. Throughout the evening one theme continued to surface, particularly when talking with classmates who had settled in other parts of the United States. That theme was how wonderful it is to live in a place like Union County, where the people are so caring, so benevolent, so giving, and so genuine. Not surprisingly several classmates after having lived in other areas for extended periods of time pined to return to Union County. Much of that longing was driven by missing the overwhelming sense of community that so many were unable to duplicate as they settled in popular zip codes throughout the land. One friend who lived elsewhere was recently deeply touched and overwhelmed by the amazing outpouring of local support received upon the recent passing of a parent. Similar stories were recounted throughout the evening. Working with the Union County Foundation nearly every day I see selfless acts that reinforce how wonderful the people of this county are and how much they care for their communities, their friends, and their neighbors. In the last few years the people of Union County have established over 40 Funds within the Union County Foundation. These Funds support and benefit a wide spectrum of causes ranging from parks and memorials to scholarships and safer street crossings; from support of foster families to assistance with school fees…the list goes on and on. Sometimes that which is most important about our communities is that which is least appreciated. For me it took my 30th year reunion to remind me that what we have in Union County is really quite special and as my classmates will agree… there really is no place like home. The Union County Foundation encourages you to consider your present and future charitable goals. The Foundation is equipped to help you achieve these goals by providing: planned giving and estate planning resource information, charitable gift annuities/life income plans, and a broad array of charitable choices.
