Worth Remembering
By David Vollrath, Executive Director Union County Foundation

My father passed away on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, 2004. Like many veterans my father never used to say much about his years spent in the military, but I always knew his military service impacted him in a way I could never fully understand. During the last few years of his life my father began to talk a lot about his WWII memories and experiences. I would even say that in his final months of life those memories dominated his thoughts. Some memories were terrible and others were surprisingly wonderful, but in total they best could be described as life changing. The impact of WWII on my father is not unlike the impact that hundreds of thousands of other past and present U.S. servicemen and servicewomen carry with them every day. Their sacrifices and accomplishments are worth remembering… more than that they are worth memorializing.

Union County should take great pride in the fact that there currently are two substantial projects under way to honor and memorialize past and present U.S. military veterans. The North Union District Veteran’s Memorial project broke ground on September 30th. This memorial is to be located in Richwood Park and will honor veterans of the North Union School District. The second project is spearheaded by The Union County Veterans Remembrance Committee and will result in a Veteran’s Memorial monument to be placed on the grounds of the Union County Courthouse.

The Union County Foundation proudly houses the specific Funds that support the completion of these two Veteran’s Memorials. It has been my distinct honor, on nearly a daily basis, to sit across my desk from local veterans and their families as they scribe out checks of support for these projects. I can’t begin to describe the depth of pride and humility that is visible as I look into their eyes. They are moved in a way unlike anything I have ever seen. It is the same look that I saw in my father’s eyes and it’s the same look that calls each of us to support these projects to their deserving level. If you have not yet "stood up" for these memorials I invite you to do so.

The Union County Foundation encourages you and/or your business to lend financial support to these veteran memorials. Simply forward your tax-deductible contribution care of the Union County Foundation to the specific memorial Fund (North Union District Veteran’s Memorial Fund and/or The Veteran’s Remembrance Fund).
