Two for The Ages
By David Vollrath, Executive Director Union County Foundation
One of the Union County Foundations many roles is to serve as a depository for significant community projects.
In this role we receive, receipt, track, and invest contributions that are made by individuals and businesses in
support of worthwhile public projects. That’s a very bland description for what can be a very meaningful task.
Two very significant such projects that recently have been completed are the Veterans Monuments erected in Richwood
and Marysville. These projects are literally and figuratively ...two for the ages. I can’t recall
a time in my lifetime when two more significant Union County projects were occurring, let alone at the same time.
Each of these monuments will stand for time & eternity in remembrance of Union County men and women who have
proudly given military service to our country. In terms of charitable giving over 2400 contributors gave a total
of over $650,000 towards these two projects. Contributions ranged from a few loose coins to tens of thousands of
dollars. Checks came into our office from across the street and from across the nation. The chance to be a part
of these monuments stirred people’s hearts and souls in a way that I have never seen before. When veterans and
their families brought checks into our office you could see a deep pride in the depths of their eyes. It was a
privilege and a blessing to listen to their stories and to see how grateful they were that these monuments were
being constructed.
Some people question (perhaps rightfully so) the fortitude of my generation ( baby-boomers). After working closely
with the many men and women behind these two projects let it be said that the tenacity, integrity, perseverance,
charitableness, and industriousness of the “greatest generation” and of our veterans is beyond reproach. I experienced
a lot of people passionately and unselfishly giving of their time, talents, and resources. As Union County citizens
we owe them all a debt of gratitude. These projects truly are ... two for the ages.
On a final note, this year on the 4th of July I had a rare chance to travel to our nations’ capital to view the
fireworks display from the private confines of the White House lawn. As it turned out the dedication of the North
Union District Veteran’s Monument was on the same day. Without much hesitation I chose to travel to Richwood. Some
would say that was kind of a silly decision. I’m grateful for that morning spent in Richwood. I saw faces and felt
emotions that will stay with me long after the memory of those fireworks would have faded. I can’t think of a better
way to have celebrated the 4th of July.
